Here's how to light your Palo Santo:
Connect with your intention
Hold the Palo Santo stick in a horizontal or slightly upward-tilted position.
Close your eyes and feel inside.
- What intention do you want to set?
- Cleansing, healing, clarity?
Let this intention flow into your heart.
Awaken the fire
Light the end of the stick. Gently bring the top edge of the flame to the wood, as this is where the heat is strongest. Feel the energy of the fire as it makes the stick glow.
Saying goodbye to the flame
Let the stick burn for 10-60 seconds, depending on how long you wish to smudge. Then carefully extinguish the flame – mindfully and respectfully. In shamanic tradition, this gently sends the good spirits on their way.
Let the embers speak
Now hold the stick upright so that the ember is freely suspended in the air. This will keep it burning brightly and powerfully. Avoid placing the stick on a cold surface, as this can weaken the ember.
Guide the sacred smoke
Use your hand or a feather to consciously guide the smoke. Cleanse rooms, objects, or yourself with it. Feel how the heavy energy dissipates and is transformed into light energy.
